Summer Reading

Parents should have received a letter regarding summer reading expectations. Please see below if you did not. Students can also find this assignment in Google Classroom.

Summer Reading 2015

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Thank you for your dedication to your child’s education over the past school year.  It has been a pleasure to be part of their learning, and we look forward to an awesome 8th grade year!

We would like to share our suggestions for summer reading.  It is important for adolescents to maintain a light routine of reading, as numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer prevents “summer reading loss.” Reading a handful of books over the summer can have a significant impact on the success of middle school students.

Students will be asked to read 3+ books at their reading level. At least 1 of these choices should be in the historical fiction genre and 1 should be informational (nonfiction) text.  Students can use the log on the back of this page to keep track of their reading.

As always, we encourage students to pick up books that interest and challenge them. Self-selection of reading materials is an important factor in motivating young readers. Please utilize the local St. Albans Free Library, as it is has a fantastic collection of young adult literature. In addition, Ms. Westbrook and Mrs. Lanfear have a limited supply of books to loan to students who need them.

Students should be ready to share their opinions about the books they read during the first week of school. In addition, they should also be ready to write a book recommendation for one of their favorite books from their summer reading.

If you have any questions about our summer literacy requirements, please send your learning community teacher an email message. We hope you all enjoy a long, relaxing and rejuvenating summer break.

Best Wishes,

Lorelei Westbrook Abby Lanfear
